Prefers an independent review and targeted amendments to the HPOA over repeal, keeping strong public protections.
- Asked by the HPOA candidate questionnaire (Psychologists of BC for Ethical Care and Governance): "Will you commit to repealing the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) and replacing it with legislation, built with the professions and the public, that keeps politics out of health care?"
- Independent review followed by targeted amendments to the HPOA
- Review government appointment powers, political-interference safeguards, privacy protections, and fairness of complaints and discipline
- Replace the HPOA only if amendments cannot fix it, with a clear plan to maintain patient safety
“In response to your question regarding the HPOA, my preference would be an independent review followed by targeted amendments. As a registered pharmacy technician, I understand the importance of regulation that protects patients while respecting professional expertise and ensuring fair processes. I would want the review to examine government appointment powers, safeguards against political interference, privacy protections, and the fairness of complaints and disciplinary procedures. Patients and healthcare professionals should both have meaningful input. I support keeping strong public protections and correcting provisions that undermine trust or professional independence. If a thorough review shows that those problems cannot be addressed through amendments, then replacement legislation should be considered, with a clear plan to maintain patient safety throughout the transition.”
