Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Will I be able to afford to live here?

Alton's 18-point Right to Housing platform includes a vacancy tax, multiplied social housing, landlord licensing, tenant supports, safe tenting zones, and reallocating police surpluses to housing.

  • Launch a vacancy tax and acquisition strategy to turn vacant buildings, parking lots, brownfields and golf courses into social housing sites.
  • Multiply Kitchener Housing and Region of Waterloo Housing stock; expand non-market partnerships for co-ops, affordable family housing and rent-geared-to-income.
  • Consolidate a tenant rights hub: rent bank, property standards, eviction prevention, legal aid, tenant organizing.
  • Require landlord licensing/rent registry; use renoviction and rental replacement tools.
  • Ensure safe tenting zones: review bylaws for human-rights compliance; use public land for stability and healing.
  • Reallocate police surpluses to the housing stability system; litigate the right to housing.

Taxes & spending

What happens to my tax bill, and where does the money go?

Alton would explore progressive property tax reform targeting multiple-property owners and removing loopholes.

  • Explore property tax reform with progressive taxation targeting multiple properties and removing loopholes.
  • Make visible how much of the tax levy is due to federal and provincial neglect, via tax bills.

Emergency services

When I call for help, will it come fast enough?

Alton would reclaim police surplus funding for the housing stability system instead of policing.

  • Police surpluses are leading to cuts in the housing stability system, including cancelling three social housing projects in 2026.
  • 'We need to reclaim that funding for the sector trained for care not criminalization.'
