Willcox: sidewalk snow clearing MUST return to the city - residents clearing city property is “absolutely ridiculous.’’

  • City clearing gives consistent conditions coordinated with street plowing.
  • The onus on residents to clear city property is absolutely ridiculous.
Show their words & source (a few sentences)
“Snow clearing of city sidewalks and/or property, MUST go back to being the responsibility of the City. This will result in a more consistent condition of the cleared sidewalks, and can be coordinated with the public works street clearing schedule. The onus of the clearing of snow, from city property, by residents, is absolutely ridiculous.”

This candidate has spoken about this issue more than once. Each statement is shown with its own source.

Chapman wants network gaps closed, wider trails, better signage, asphalt replacing gravel, and e-bike speed enforcement.

  • Network gaps need closing; new trails should be built wider with large, visible safety signage.
  • Replace gravel trails with asphalt; enforce e-bike/e-scooter speeds on trails.
“There are gaps in the network that need to be closed. I would like to see more signage on the multi-use trails to ensure the safety of all users. Signs large enough to be seen by cyclists and low enough to be seen by walkers and rollers. Replace gravel trails with asphalt. Find ways to enforce ebike and escooter speeds on trails. Work with corporations/strip-malls to install bike racks on their premises. Require bike check services at all events whether city run or otherwise.”

Chapman wants more regular public transit service across Kitchener, including half-buses feeding the ION.

  • More regular transit throughout the city, e.g. half-buses from ION into suburbs.
  • Zoning should put intensification where transit can be justified.
“I think we need more regular public transportation services throughout the City. One suggestion might be to use 'half-buses' departing from the ION route and into the suburbs on a more frequent bases. Bringing the services to neighbourhoods is another way to facilitate people's needs. Just as we set-up schools in neighbourhoods to accommodate the needs of families, we should also be using a similar approach to ensure that there are Dr's offices, dentists, grocery stores, a hardware store etc, in close proximity to where people live. Zoning needs to ensure intensification in all areas of the city to justify increased public transportation but also to incentivize services to set-up shop in areas further away from the core.”
