Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Taxes & spending

What happens to my tax bill, and where does the money go?

Edgell accepts that properly maintaining infrastructure may require higher taxes, saying residents appreciate the value for money.

  • On cycling-route maintenance: 'Maintenance is, put simply, just a matter of sufficient staff resources and funding.'
  • Accepts that adequate maintenance 'may result in increased taxes, but I believe that residents appreciate the value for money of maintenance.'

“The uncomfortable truth is that this may result in increased taxes, but I believe that residents appreciate the value for money of maintenance.”

Roads & infrastructure

Will the things I use every day actually get fixed?

Edgell would lower school-zone speed limits to 30 km/h and bring back speed cameras where allowed.

  • Would lower the speed limit to 30 km/h in school zones (as Toronto did in 660 locations); re-implement speed cameras in school zones if the Province allowed.
  • Would prioritize active transportation within neighbourhoods first and ensure connections between neighbourhoods exist.

“Infrastructure is not permanent; we built it, and we can change it if it no longer suits our needs. I would prioritize active transportation within neighbourhoods first, and ensure connections between neighbourhoods exist.”

Active transportation

Can I walk and bike safely around town?

Edgell would commit dedicated funding to Markham's active transportation plan.

  • Supports dedicated and predictable funding for cycling and active transportation in Markham's capital budgets.
  • The Active Transportation Master Plan recommended $5.4M per year in capital funding; the 2025 budget gave $4.3M and 2026 $2.2M – 'The Mayor's budgets have not provided enough funding to meet the Plan's goals' (the City spent $33.6M on road widening in 2024).
  • Three term commitments: connect the disconnected bike network; increase Vision Zero targets and interventions; work with York Region so regional AT facilities integrate with Markham's network.
  • Yes to protected cycling infrastructure on appropriate arterial and collector roads, even where it reallocates road space; would strongly advocate to the Province and Region on regional roads.
  • Notes the Ontario government is 'notably hostile to active transportation facilities' and commits to strong advocacy for AT in all forms.
