Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Will I be able to afford to live here?

Proposes a 'three strikes and you're in' approvals process to end endless back-and-forth between developers and planning staff.

  • After a third developer submission addressing staff requests, both parties meet behind a closed door with red pens out — nobody leaves until it's done.
  • Says it has never actually had to be used in the last two years, because everybody knows that's the end result.

“If there are still concerns, both parties meet in a room, close the door, have their red pens out. Nobody leaves until it's done. Now the fun part of that is we've never had to do it in the last two years because everybody knows that's the end result.”

Taxes & spending

What happens to my tax bill, and where does the money go?

Parrish says she has already saved taxpayers $45 million via Peel service downloads.

  • Says she has already saved taxpayers $45 million by moving roads ($30M) and waste ($15M) services from Peel Region (heavily subsidized by Mississauga) to the three municipalities.
  • Publishing an estimated-savings table: e.g. a $1M assessed home would save ~$742.60/year under her full plan.
  • Next target: a fair Peel police budget split, worth what she estimates at ~$106 million more per year for Mississauga taxpayers.

Emergency services

When I call for help, will it come fast enough?

Parrish wants the Peel police cost split moved from 62/38 to 50/50 over three years, asking the province to phase in the change.

  • Mississauga taxpayers cover 62% of the Peel Regional Police budget vs Brampton's 38%, despite similar populations; she calls the assessment-based formula unfair since 1974.
  • Took the funding formula directly to Premier Doug Ford, asking the province to even out the split over a three-year transition so Brampton isn't hit with a sudden tax shock.
  • Frames the fight as about splitting the bill fairly, not the size of the police budget; notes her late father, Constable Edward Janozeski, served 37 years with Toronto Police.

“If we can get a fair balance and do it over a three-year period, I think it will work just fine.”

Data centres

Should energy-hungry data centres be welcomed here?

Expects the city's one-year data-centre pause to be overturned for legal reasons; 'a little disappointed in it.'

  • Says the pause will likely be overturned on legal grounds.
  • A city study on water use, noise and other concerns was due just after the election; hopes it settles concerns so projects can proceed.

“I'm a little disappointed in it. We had a study that we were doing to get into water use, noise, all the things that people are concerned about in Arizona, but we don't have here. And that report was due to come just after the election. Hopefully, that'll soothe out everybody's concerns, and we'll be able to go ahead.”
