“We should invest in improving existing roads and active transportation infrastructure, as well as prioritizing making public transit more reliable, affordable and accessible. Research shows that building more road space for cars does not alleviate congestion. This is called induced demand, where increasing road capacity leads to more vehicles on the road. It means that the benefits of added car lanes or new roads are quickly negated by a corresponding rise in traffic. Conversely, providing better transit, safer spaces for riding a bike, and proper sidewalks increases their use, helping to reduce the reliance on cars and ease traffic congestion.”

Our aging critical infrastructure is ill-equipped to manage the effect of climate-change induced severe weather events like we saw this summer. This is especially true in older communities like Bay Ward with most stormwater systems built over 60 years ago. I’ve been successful in getting improvements to stormwater and drainage infrastructure in Bay Ward neighbourhoods over the years, including improvements to the ditches in Lakeview. But more needs to be done. After the Canada Day storm, I worked with council colleagues to demand a full investigation to understand the causes of flooding, and steps the city can take to mitigate the impacts of future severe weather events. This investigation is ongoing, and I’ve been sharing residents’ concerns directly with staff to ensure all impacted neighbourhoods are heard. Following the investigation, I will ensure areas identified for repair or replacement are prioritized, so our neighbourhoods can be more resilient in the face of increasingly frequent severe weather events.”
