Sinan Erdemir

Candidate for Councillor - Ward 16 (Don Valley East)

In their own words

This candidate hasn’t listed a campaign website or social account with the Town. That says nothing about them as a candidate — it just means less of their material is published online for us to summarise.

Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Will I be able to afford to live here?

Sinan Erdemir would incentivize homeowners to rent out rooms or basements, and support landlords on rent-payment issues.

  • Prioritize increasing supply by making better use of existing homes: financial incentives or tax breaks for homeowners to rent out a room, basement or part of their home.
  • Improve support for landlords who don't receive rent on time; continue supporting renters and enforcing landlord maintenance responsibilities.

“I will prioritize increasing supply to make better use of existing homes, making it easier for homeowners to rent out a room, basement, or other part of their home by creating a financial incentive or tax break to do so. I will also ensure that we improve our current support for landlords who do not receive their rent payment on time. I will continue to support renters and enforce maintenance of property and other responsibilities by the landlord.”

Taxes & spending

What happens to my tax bill, and where does the money go?

Sinan Erdemir: 'A tax increase would not get my vote'; manage tax dollars more effectively instead.

  • It boils down to management: be more diligent in spending, weighing long-term vs upfront costs.
  • Firmly believes tax dollars can be managed more effectively: 'A tax increase would not get my vote.'

“It boils down to management. Everything trickles down from there. We must be more diligent in our spending. Sometimes it isn't about making cuts, and instead about looking at it from a different angle. For example, we can ask: Will this cost the city more long-term, or will it cost more up front but save us long-term? I firmly believe that we can manage our tax dollars more effectively. A tax increase would not get my vote.”

Emergency services

When I call for help, will it come fast enough?

Sinan Erdemir would convert streetlights to LED, expand AI-assisted transit cameras, and build 'Nightwalkers'-style patrols.

  • Streets are getting darker: support faster conversion of streetlights to LED — brighter and more efficient.
  • Expand the AI-assisted cameras piloted at TMU subway station to stations, subways, streetcars and buses; encourage expanding Neighbourhood Watch into Sweden-style 'Nightwalkers'.

“I've noticed that our streets are getting darker and darker, so I will prioritize supporting faster implementation of the City's plan to convert our streetlights to LED. The result will be brighter and more efficient. I will support expanding the recent AI-assisted cameras which has piloted at TMU subway station; this should be on subway stations, subways, streetcars, and busses. I will encourage and support expansion of Neighbourhood Watch into something similar to "Nightwalkers" in Sweden, which is a proven method to decrease crime.”

Transit

Can I get where I need to go without driving?

Sinan Erdemir would move bike lanes off the road onto boulevards at sidewalk elevation, freeing road space for vehicles.

  • Push for redesigned bike lanes that exist off the road: on the boulevard between sidewalk and curb, at sidewalk elevation.
  • Says this keeps cyclists safe, solves the e-scooter dilemma, and leaves road space for vehicles.

“I will push for a redesign of our bike lanes. I believe that bike lanes can exist without the need to be on the road and take up road space which should be for vehicles. Bike lanes can exist by using a portion of the boulevard (the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb) and they can exist on the same elevation as the sidewalk. This ensures safety. This also solves our e-scooter dilemma. E-scooters are currently illegal on city property, but this is not enforced because there is no solution yet. This redesign ensures safe space for all.”

Government

Will decisions be made in the open, and will anyone answer for them?

Sinan Erdemir would prioritize city services: a more reliable TTC, cleaned and maintained streets, green spaces, snow removal.

  • Many residents have lost faith in city services; streets look neglected.
  • Would prioritize making the TTC much more reliable, regularly cleaned and maintained streets, proper green spaces, proper snow removal, and higher standards for city-run programs.

“After knocking on many doors and speaking with residents in our neighbourhood, I've come to realize that many (myself included) have lost faith in city services. It is easy to see why, just look around to see how neglected our streets have gotten. I will prioritize city services such as making the TTC much more reliable; ensuring that our streets are regularly cleaned and maintained, which includes proper green spaces and proper snow removal; holding our city-run programs to a higher standard.”
