Candidate for Mayor

In their own words

This candidate hasn’t listed a campaign website or social account with the Town. That says nothing about them as a candidate — it just means less of their material is published online for us to summarise.

Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Will I be able to afford to live here?

Tang says Toronto's housing crunch is partly vacant, distressed and unmanaged properties — the question is how to bring them back into use.

  • Calls housing one of Toronto's core issues, perhaps the most important one.
  • Argues the shortage picture is incomplete: vacant properties, homes in financial distress, and buildings left unmanaged or deteriorating exist.
  • Proposes the City help identify vacant homes and unused rooms, support repairs and fire-safety work, and connect them with people experiencing homelessness.

“Many people believe Toronto simply does not have enough housing, but that is not the whole picture. There are vacant properties, homes under financial distress and buildings left unmanaged or allowed to deteriorate. The question is how to bring those properties back into use.”

Taxes & spending

Emergency services

When I call for help, will it come fast enough?

Tang says for basic fire-safety problems like missing smoke alarms, the City should help fix them cheaply, not just punish.

  • Says a smoke alarm costs about C$20 and the City could purchase them in bulk and help install them.
  • Argues that when a basic safety problem is identified, the first response should not always be punishment.
  • Says the first question should be how to solve the problem quickly and affordably.

Government

Will decisions be made in the open, and will anyone answer for them?

Tang argues Toronto's core problem is execution, not resources: money, housing and talent are trapped across departments.

  • Central campaign argument: Toronto's most serious problems stem from an inability to convert existing resources into measurable results.
  • Says the city has money, housing and talent, but those resources are trapped between departments, regulations and competing interests.
  • Platform applies business discipline and capital-efficiency principles to municipal operations.
