Where they stand

Every candidate in this race is shown against the same 16 issues, in the same order, whether or not we’ve found something for each one. Why we do it this way.

Housing

Will I be able to afford to live here?

Goertz would use public land for affordable housing via non-profit partnerships and keep township ownership through long-term leases.

  • Support using Regionally and municipally owned land for affordable housing where it makes sense, in partnership with non-profits, co-operatives and other housing providers.
  • Inventory Township-owned properties for housing suitability; where appropriate keep Township ownership of the land and lease it long-term to a non-profit, co-op or affordable-housing provider.
  • Build a housing mix — smaller homes, townhomes, apartments, secondary units and seniors' housing — with communities involved in deciding what fits their needs.
  • Create a faster, clearer process for secondary units: one place for help, step-by-step guides, checklists and pre-reviewed plans or templates so homeowners can add rental, multigenerational or aging-parent housing.

Confidence:High

Goertz proposes a Finance and Accountability Committee to review spending, reserves, debt and major capital projects year-round.

  • Residents should be able to understand where tax dollars go, what major projects are coming and how Council plans to pay for them.
  • Propose a Finance and Accountability Committee to review spending, reserves, debt and major capital projects throughout the year, not just at budget time.
  • The committee could also seek grants, partnerships and other funding options before relying on property taxes.
  • Before approving a major expense, ask not only what it costs taxpayers but who else benefits, who Council could work with, and whether there is another way to get it done.
“I would propose a Finance and Accountability Committee to review spending, reserves, debt and major capital projects throughout the year, not just at budget time.”

Transit

Can I get where I need to go without driving?

Goertz would push for evening and weekend transit in Wilmot, better connecting residents to jobs, health care and services.

  • Wilmot's Route 77 is weekday-only and ends in the early evening, limiting options for seniors, young people, lower-income residents and anyone who cannot drive or afford a vehicle.
  • Advocate for evening and weekend transit and better connections to jobs, health care and services.

Goertz would require a clear Water Impact Summary in staff reports before Council votes on planning applications affecting groundwater.

  • Farmland, groundwater, wetlands, streams and natural areas are connected — decisions about development, roads, fill and drainage can affect all of them.
  • Protect farmland from unnecessary loss, strengthen how major land-use changes are considered, and help farmers, landowners, businesses and community groups connect with funding, volunteers and expertise for restoration projects.
  • For major planning applications with significant potential groundwater impacts, advocate for staff reports to include a clear Water Impact Summary before Council votes.

Will there be a doctor and a hospital when we need one?

Goertz would work with health organizations and partners to identify gaps in rural care and recruit and retain health-care providers.

How fast should we grow, and who decides what gets built where?

This candidate has spoken about this issue more than once. Each statement is shown with its own source.

Goertz would rewrite Wilmot's Official Plan to protect farmland, wells and water before opening new land.

  • Stronger Official Plan protections for farmland, wells and water supply
  • Protections considered before land is opened for additional development
  • Better use of land already available for development
“I would pursue changes to our Official Plan to put stronger protections around farmland, wells and our water supply, and to make sure those protections are considered before land is opened up for additional development.”

Is our drinking water safe and our waste handled?

Goertz supports keeping water and wastewater publicly owned and operated and would oppose any move to private ownership or operation.

  • Support keeping water and wastewater systems publicly owned and publicly operated; speak up against efforts to move services, assets or decision-making into private hands or structures that reduce public accountability.
