“We are in a trade war with the south, and to our east we have a province that's deciding in the next couple of weeks that's deciding within the next couple of weeks if we'll be separating, so now is the time as British Columbians to really come together, once again to be supporting small business owners, to be supporting people here where we are at in this community, spending our dollars here.”

Wants to unleash the private sector to bring big projects and higher-paying jobs to Nanaimo.

  • Backs big projects that promise higher-paying jobs for Nanaimo
  • Supports Harmac's proposed major greenhouse (up to 100 well-paying jobs) and growing more of Vancouver Island's food locally
  • Focuses on restoring the forest industry
Show their words & source (reported remarks)
“Nanaimo needs big projects, because they promise higher-paying jobs. We need to provide more for our kids than providing coffee for kayak jobs…Harmac is wanting to add a major greenhouse that will provide up to 100 well-paying jobs, so Vancouver Island does not grow enough of its food. Imagine if Harmac, of all places, they want to put a major greenhouse in there…we will also focus on restoring the forest industry.”

Points to doubled trades training and VIU worker partnerships, and focusing public dollars on B.C. workers and suppliers.

  • Notes the NDP government doubled trades training and added trades training seats at VIU
  • Sees opportunity in federal ship-building commitments and the Port of Nanaimo
  • Says an NDP government would focus public dollars on hiring B.C. workers and suppliers
Show their words & source (reported remarks)
“With VIU at the centre of our economic driver, for us to have doubled trades training and added specifically for VIU, a number of trades training seats this summer, in addition to the trade centre that we built in 2018, I can so imagine the potential with federal commitments around ship-building, the great opportunities at the Port of Nanaimo. There's very little unused industrial land in coastal B.C., but there we are at the Port. We've got huge opportunities to harness that federal, VIU worker partnership.”

Supports converting 50 units at 250 Bryden St. in Nanaimo to recovery-oriented housing.

  • Backs the shift of the 50-unit 250 Bryden St. development to recovery-oriented housing
  • Frames it as giving people more choice alongside the city's low-barrier supportive housing
“We've been building housing to help people struggling with homelessness get back on their feet, and with several hundred supportive housing units in Nanaimo, we can now offer people more options. Making 50 units at 250 Bryden St. recovery oriented gives people more choice, and I'm grateful to the Newcastle Community Association and city council for constructively partnering on this change. When people are supported, they can start to re-establish stability in their lives and build a better future.”
